A military nurse is a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) who serves within the armed forces as a commissioned officer. They provide medical care to active-duty soldiers, veterans, and their families — both on military bases and in combat zones around the world.
Key Responsibilities
Providing emergency and trauma care to wounded soldiers in combat and non-combat situations
Administering medications, vaccines, and treatments
Assisting in surgeries and managing pre- and post-operative care
Monitoring patients for infections, complications, and recovery progress
Leading and supervising medical teams in high-pressure environments
Responding to mass casualty events and medical emergencies
Working in military hospitals, clinics, field medical units, and aboard ships or aircraft
Qualifications Required
Education
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — a 4-year degree — is mandatory. Associate degrees are not accepted since military nurses serve as commissioned officers.
Licensure
Must pass the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination) to become a certified Registered Nurse.
Citizenship
Must be a citizen of the country's armed forces they wish to serve in.
Physical Fitness
Must pass a medical examination and physical fitness test, and meet height/weight standards.
Officer Training
Must complete branch-specific officer training (5–12 weeks) covering military protocols, leadership, and field conditioning.
