Who Are SSC Stenographers?
SSC Stenographers are government employees who work under Group B and Group C categories in various Central Government Ministries, Departments, and Offices across India. They are recruited by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) through a national level exam.
There are two grades:
Stenographer Grade C тАУ Group B (Non-Gazetted)
Stenographer Grade D тАУ Group C
What Does a Stenographer Actually Do?
The core job of a Stenographer revolves around assisting senior officers in their day-to-day official work. Here's what a typical day looks like:
1. ЁЯУЭ Taking Dictation
The most important duty. Officers dictate letters, reports, speeches, and official notes тАФ and the Stenographer must write them down in shorthand at a speed of 80тАУ100 words per minute.
2. ЁЯТ╗ Transcription Work
After taking dictation in shorthand, the Stenographer types out the full content on a computer. Accuracy and speed are both very important here.
3. ЁЯУБ File & Document Management
Stenographers maintain official files, records, and documents. They organize paperwork and ensure proper filing of government correspondence.
4. ЁЯУЕ Scheduling & Coordination
They often assist officers in managing their daily schedules, fixing appointments, and coordinating meetings.
5. ЁЯУз Drafting Official Communication
Sometimes Stenographers also help in drafting official letters, emails, and internal memos under the supervision of their officer.
6. ЁЯЦия╕П General Office Work
Printing, scanning, photocopying official documents and supporting the smooth functioning of the office.
Where Do Stenographers Get Posted?
SSC Stenographers are posted in Central Government offices such as:
Ministry of Finance
Ministry of Home Affairs
Ministry of Defence
CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General)
Railway Board
CBI and other departments
Postings can be in Delhi or anywhere across India depending on vacancy and preference.

Selection Process

1. Computer Based Exam (CBE)
This is the first and most important stage. An online written exam is conducted with 200 questions from Reasoning, General Awareness and English Language. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. Your rank depends entirely on this exam.
2. Skill Test (Stenography Test)
After clearing CBE, candidates are called for the Stenography Skill Test. An officer reads out a passage and you have to write it in shorthand, then type it on a computer. Grade D requires 80 wpm and Grade C requires 100 wpm speed. This round is only qualifying тАФ marks are not added to the merit list.
3. Document Verification (DV)
Candidates who clear the Skill Test are called for Document Verification. You need to carry original documents like 10th and 12th certificates, ID proof, and category certificate if applicable.
4. Medical Examination
After Document Verification, a basic medical test is conducted. Eyesight, physical fitness and general health are checked. No serious medical condition should be present to clear this stage.
5. Final Joining
After clearing all the above stages, a posting letter is issued and the candidate joins the allotted Central Government office.
